What is 'schmearch'?
It is a meta search engine.
How do I use 'schmearch'?
You can either use it from it's web page or you could install it. The search engine is used by entering a keyword and a search string. For example, if you want to find my web page, you could enter the command:
gl jakob schmid
Why would I use 'schmearch'?
Because it's FAST! Instead of going to a web page and entering a search, you can jump directly to the search results.
Should I Install Anything?
You can either make http://www.schmid.dk/schmearch/ your default home page or you could install it as your default search engine. If Schmearch is installed as your default search engine, you can 'Quickschmearch', which simply means that you can go to your address line and enter a schmearch command.
Firefox Installation
Go to the URL about:config and set the key keyword.URL to the value
http://www.schmid.dk/schmearch/?command=
Chrome Installation
- Updated: 2010-10-04
- Click the wrench icon on the top right, and select 'Options'.
- In the 'Basics' tab, in the 'Default search' section, click 'Manage'.
- In the new 'Search Engines' window, click 'Add...'.
- Name: 'schmearch' (or whatever you like)
- Keyword: 'schmearch' (or whatever you like)
- URL: 'http://www.schmid.dk/schmearch/?command=%s'
Make schmearch default, if you wish.
Internet Explorer Installation
- Browse to http://www.schmid.dk/schmearch/
- Click on search engine dropdown menu next to the search field at the top right of the window, select Add Search Providers, then schmearch - schmid.dk meta search engine:
- In the dialog, tick Make this my default search provider and click Add provider:
Safari Installation
Sadly, Safari still has no option of changing the default search engine. The easiest way to use schmearch seems to be the following:
- Install Glims, a Safari extension patch.
- Open Preferences, and select the Glims tab.
- In 'Search Engines', Press 'Add'.
- Enter this information:
Name: schmearch
Type: Search Engine
Query URL: http://www.schmid.dk/schmearch/?command=#query#
and click add.
- Now you can select 'schmearch' in the search drop-down menu, and search using the shortcut Command-Option-F.
Example Usage
Here is some sample schmearching commands:
wp spider-man <- Find an article about Spider-Man on Wikipedia. imdb fight club <- Find the movie 'Fight Club' on IMDB. gi space marines <- Find images of Space Marines. gs metal slug <- Look for the game 'Metal Slug' on GameSpot tv simpsons <- When are the Simpsons on danish TV?
Tips
Command-line Schmearch
You can run schmearch command-line using a text-mode browser like w3m. Place a script like the following in your executable path:
w3m -S -dump "http://www.schmid.dk/schmearch/?command=$1 $2" 2>/dev/null
Then you can run schmearch like this:
schmearch wp quadric|head -n20 schmearch rfc 4254|less schmearch tv buffy
