<li>2010-01-02 01:16:12: schmid: Oh man! They had way to much money to make this game. Sunny's doing a cute little dance routine on the camera, when your fully functional ingame iPod is playing the Two-Han Princess pop song. Insanity.
</li>
<li>2010-01-02 01:07:34: schmid: The first game of the year! Tag-teaming with Jauert. This game gets better and better, the more you get used to the mechanics. The Metal Gear Mk. II is essentially a mobile camera, which really sets this game apart from the other games in the series. And weapon customization is another awesome feature...
</li>
<li>2009-12-31 01:25:53: schmid: Playing it right now with Jauert. It's cool and very impressive in scope but has some truly ridiculous features. But that's how MGS always have been, I guess...

<li>2010-01-16 20:26:34: schmid: I'm getting 4 and 5 stars at Expert in the first attempt. This sure as hell isn't as hard as Guitar Hero III.
</li>

<li>2010-03-12 21:00:00: schmid: Played T6 against Nabaz for the first time. I wupped his ass, but he'll pick it up soon enough...
</li>
<li>2010-01-27 20:04:42: schmid: I've tried ranking up my Jin with offline ghost matches, but apparently, you can only rank up to 1st Dan. So I tried going online, and it seems they've fixed the rage quit issue. Very nice.
</li>
<li>2009-12-30 02:12:39: schmid got the <span class="gamelog_hilight">Tekken Fanatic</span> achievement.
                       - Hurra! Got all achievements in Tekken 6! Had to manually start every single character's Story Mode inside Scenario Gampaign to complete the gallery. Lame. But it is done, and I'm proud :)
</li>
<li>2009-12-21 00:57:09: schmid got the <span class="gamelog_hilight">Machine Crusher</span> achievement.
                       - Used Devil Jin - assigned LP+RP to a single button, and set it to autofire. Used Hellfire Cannon and a lot of sidesteepping.
</li>
<li>2009-12-05 18:19:56: schmid: Finally I completed all the horrible Scenario Campaign stuff - got all Tekken 6 achievements except for Gallery Completionist (get all movies), and Machine Crusher (defeat NANCY).
</li>
<li>2009-11-20 02:47:28: schmid <span class="gamelog_hilight">completed</span> Arcade Battle with Hwoarang on Very Hard difficulty.
 Got tired of trying to defeat Azazel on Very Hard after playing for something like two hours. Finally, I chose Hwoarang, put my left kick button on autofire, put a mug on top of it, and looked at some videos. It worked around the fifth attempt.

</li>
<li>2009-11-16 03:21:35: schmid: Caught up in the ridiculousness of the online play, and the stupidity of the Scneario Campaign, I almost forgot what an awesome fighting game Tekken really is. A couple of arcade fights later, I love this game again...
</li>
<li>2009-11-16 02:30:21: schmid: This is ridiculous. It seems like every other online match I play ends with the other guy rage-quitting. I don't understand: 1. Why stuff like this isn't fixed in the rules, and 2. Why people are so incredibly stupid and childish. It is really annoying, and why I don't play a lot of online games.
</li>
<li>2009-11-14 21:17:05: schmid <span class="gamelog_hilight">completed</span> Scenario Campaign with Bryan Fury.
 Finally! I never have to play this crappy mode again... The end sequence is pretty cool though - very Return of the Jedi.
</li>
<li>2009-11-14 21:05:23: schmid: 'Nice knowing you?' Is that really a befitting line to say to The Destroyer of Worlds after defeating it?
</li>
<li>2009-11-14 19:30:12: schmid: Haha ... Nancy <b>is</b> pretty awesome to play with...
</li>
<li>2009-11-14 19:26:00: schmid: Oh great - I'm a giant robot that blocks the entire screen, so I can't see anything.
</li>
<li>2009-11-14 19:14:24: schmid: Grey aliens? What the F... is going on here?
</li>
<li>2009-11-13 13:26:37: schmid: Even though the Scenario Campaign is completely and utterly lame gameplay-wise, the cutscenes are not all bad. I enjoyed the Alisa Bosconovitch - robot helicopter fight. For historic reasons, they should have called this mode Tekken Force, because that's basically what it is.
</li>

 Cool, the grandson of Heihachi takes his place as the penultimate boss.
</li>
<li>2009-11-12 23:43:49: schmid: Haha... Heihachi catches bullets in his teeth. Awesome. That guy can't be killed.
</li>
<li>2009-11-12 23:15:24: schmid: Chickens released from the bodies of thugs upon death, pummeling tiny road-bears, punching bouncing pigs. This and much more you get in the 'Scenario Campaign' of Tekken 6. So there.
</li>
<li>2009-11-09 19:48:11: schmid: Played the first couple of ranked matches. Man, the timing in the online play is weird... Anyways, I have a 1st Kyu ranking with Bryan (24 wins / 13 losses). Not too shabby.

 Man, this game is so awesome. It's a *game*, everything is secondary to the gameplay, which is the way it should be. And the redneck western style permeates the game, right down to the cool end credits music.

Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 has the old multiple-plane fighting system that this series is known for. It is sort of complimentary to the sidestep feature of 3D fighting games, in that you can dodge attacks by changing plane, and you can do special attacks from the other plane. I would prefer if the game was in a single plane, but it isn't annoying enough that it really detracts from the game.

 Completed with the ubiquitous Terry Bogard, K', and Ralf Jones (he wasn't much use, I didn't know any moves with him). I fought Adel in the end, and the end sequence is a bit disappointing - it obviously seems like the 'bad' ending. It seems you have to defeat Kusanagi with the finishing move being a Desperation Move, a Leader Desperation Move, or the first hit of a Tag Attack, to get the real ending.

This version of Tekken 6 is really good. The core gameplay is perfectly the same as the other versions, so you feel you're playing exactly the same game. The framerate is smooth, and the fights load quickly. And furthermore, due to a few key aspects, the PSP version is actually a better game than the XBox 360 version! Let me tell you why... Firstly, the online play is not possible in the PSP version, and thus it can be inferred that it contains one less broken part. Secondly, another part that is omitted and thus not broken in the PSP version is the awful Scenario Campaign mode. And thus, by omitting the flaws of the XBox 360 version, you have a complete and feature-full fighting game with no broken features. And thirdly, to top it off, I actually prefer the look of the PSP graphics; the possibilities of the XBox 360 allows for awful tasteless rim-lighting and completely over-the-top glow effects. The PSP doesn't, and the game looks better in comparison. So there.

<li>2009-08-27 11:32:48: schmid: It seems I have completed the prologue with The Warrior of Light (also known as the dim-whitted but lethal 'Fighter' in certain circles). This game is mad confusing with all of its point systems. Aside from HP, you have Purchase Points (PP) used to unlock stuff, Ability Points (AP) used to upgrade abilities (moves), Capacity Points (CP), determining how many abilities you can equip, Destiny Points (DP) used to move in story mode, Story Points (SP) which are converted to rewards at the end of a story, Experience Points (EXP) used for levelling and thus gaining new Abilities, and obviously, GIL, used for ... buying stuff, I guess. Also, there are Accomplishments (~ achievements). My head's about to explode. But in a good way... My next story (called Destiny Odyssey) will feature the Dark Knight/Paladin Cecil Harvey from FF4.
</li>
<li>2009-08-26 18:30:00: schmid: Tried this one out for the first time today. The intro movie and soundtrack are absolutely superb for a PSP title. The game itself, although initially confusing, seems to contain some original and genuinely well-designed combat, exceeding my expectations by far.

 The last mission was annoying. I feel I only beat it because I got lucky. Still, good game.
</li>
<li>2010-01-18 04:12:27: schmid: That last mission is pretty hard. I tried it several times using just the tank, and once, trying to clear the way before using the tank. I can't figure out how to do this... Must sleep now.

<li>2010-01-16 21:44:25: schmid: I love the 'unexpected features' of physics-based game. I was hammering on a big sign, when it slowly toppled over and crushed me to death. Later on, I was hammering on an enemy sniper, and pounded him right through the floor. Just now, I'm riding around in a car with an enemy soldier with his head stuck in the rear trunk of the car. :D
</li>
<li>2009-11-01 23:26:17: schmid: Euw. Torture? I'm not into that. This game doesn't have to be *that* realistic...
</li>
<li>2009-10-31 18:49:40: schmid: Haha... I was escaping from huge numbers of EDF in a completely busted vehicle, ran into the Guerrilla base, jumped out of the vehicle, that ran into a wall and exploded. Sorry guys - my bad!
</li>
<li>2009-10-31 15:45:45: schmid: Man, I really enjoy this game - this is the quintessence of open world games, guerilla attacks, hiding from the EDF, and crazy random events happening all the time. In this game, I progress doing what I always do in open world games, running around, experimenting with the world, and destroying random stuff...
</li>
<li>2009-10-27 23:44:46: schmid: I just love the randomness of all that happens in this game. I just killed a shitload of EDF soldiers, only to be defeated by a windmill, slowly sliding down from a cliff (after I shot rockets at it), slowly crushing me... Ouch.

 What the? When I started the game, it was patched, and the patch modified the difficulty to have unlimited lives. Suddenly, completing it was a breeze... Weird. Didn't get an achievement for it, though, which kind of sucks.

<li>2009-06-29 00:00:00: schmid: Finally got through level 6. The fighting in this level is fine, but the jumping is just unfair. I fell into the water so many times it hurts. But now I've got the bionic arm upgrade. Awesome.
</li>
<li>2009-06-23 00:00:00: schmid: Played a bit of BC:R for real today. It was great to see some of the other weapons, I especially like the shotgun; just landing in front of an unsuspecting dude and blowing his head off is very satisfying. The bosses are great - they are all structured as puzzles, and when you've understood what to do, you'll usually just finish them off without much trouble. But some levels of this game are just punishing; for instance, level 6 is pretty rough.

<li>2010-05-22 05:34:19: schmid: After a long night of playing (still slightly intoxicated from the nice dinner with Jeppe Nielsen and his girlfriend Sascha), I finally resumed playing Super Metroid for real after a considerable break. This 3rd version of Street Fighter III from 1999 has a lot of enhancements compared to the other versions. Apart from it having no less than 20 characters to choose from, including some real oddballs like Q or Twelve, it has the nice feature of being able to select one of two different opponents for each match (later copied in Tekken 5). Also the soundtrack is really 90's-cool with lots of hip-hop and even some jungle. Awesome.

The successors of this now classic fighter may top it in many ways, but this was the game, I played during my gymnasium period, and of course it holds a special place in my heart. Also, the music in Street Fighter II, composed by Yoko Shimomura, is absolutely awesome.

 Completed with Ryu again. Man, Guile is hard in SF2. And Vega is ridiculous with Ryu. Fortunately, Guile and his Flash Kicks worked quite well. And let's never speak of M. Bison again... By the way, apparently, I should defeat Sheng Long to be able to stand a chance. :D

 Balrog, Sagat, and M. Bison put up a good fight, but it seems that sudden, hard low kicks seems to do the trick most of the time. When I lost to him, Bison uttered the memorable: 'Get lose, you can't compare with my powers.' - Get lose? Footloose? When I beat him, I was rewarded with one of the worst end sequence animations of all time... Still, I'm proud. :)

 I just realized an important feature of Garou. Low blocks do not block high attacks. And as most AI attacks are high, block high should be the default defensive action, not low block. Like in Street Fighter IV, the final boss seems to be bad at blocking jumping kicks and sweeps - so I played aggresively, jumping around and doing hard kicks. It worked.

Not that it's hard, or doesn't make sense, because it does. But it is so buggy! I died about 10 times getting stuck on the floor, and a couple of times running up to a tentacle with revved up chainsaw, sawing into it, without any result. I quickly panicked, tried again two times, to no avail, and I ended up on the bottom of the lake. Guess the fight wasn't really tested - but it could easily have been left out of the game. However, I see why they left it in - the Leviathan is an extremely nice model...

With the release of the new batch of Xbox 360s (now without guaranteed hardware failure within the first month), I caved in and bought one. The first real game I played on my first 7th generation console was Gears of War. In the beginning, I just couldn't stop walking slowly around and looking at the graphics; and Gears is very nice to look at indeed.

The environment is post-apocalyptic, with streets and houses being transformed into ruined battlegrounds. Just the way I like it. The graphics is extremely detailed, and some objects have simulated newtonian physics, which is new to me (never got into the whole Half Life 2-thing, even though everybody told me I should :). The first dangling corpse I found was my plaything for several minutes, pushing it around and shooting at it. That being said, I believe that the physics in a game like this will seem ridiculous in a few years, when the evolution of that particular game feature will have run its course.

 I had a bit of trouble with the end of chapter 4. I guess the solution is contrary to my playing style, but to quote Cuzit from his GameFAQ:

You have thirty seconds to get to the APC. Two Boomers and an Emergence hole stand in your way. The thirty seconds doesn't activate until the Emergence hole activates or one of the two Boomers falls. On Casual or Hardcore, just head outside through either door and make a huge freaking run for it. If you run quick enough, you can get to the APC before the Emergence hole appears, saving you a lot of trouble. That's the only strategy; run like hell.
General RAAM is a bit too difficult on hardcore for my taste. I loaded an earlier chapter to get 12 Torque Bow shots ready for the battle. I equipped the Longshot along with the bow, and I got him. If you are having trouble, make sure you have the 12 Torque Bow shots.
</li>
<li>2008-08-31 17:40:00: schmid <span class="gamelog_hilight">completed</span> the game with on Casual difficulty.
 Gears is very enjoyable, if you like the whole 'playing soldiers' thing. The game is seen solely from the perspective of relatively mindless grunts, which somehow suits the game perfectly. By the way, the main protagnoist, Marcus Fenix, is played by John Di Maggio (Bender from Futurama). One of the other marines, Augustus Cole, seem to be inspired by his sinister namesake from X-Files episode 28 'Sleepless' - the Jacob's Ladder-inspired Vietnam-episode.

But the action is like nothing I've ever played. The use of cover, the hip/shoulder fire mechanics, reloading, everything is just the way it should be, and you are pulled into the action with wonderfully realistic simulated hand-held camera and punchy and detailed sound effects.

Completing the game on Casual difficulty wasn't much of a problem, indeed the game seems to be tested and designed so as to have a perfectly smooth learning curve, and annoy the player as little as possible. I found a single spot with an annoyingly placed continue point, and a few textures that weren't loaded after continuing, but that was about it.

The game is short, but has plenty of multiplayer options, so I'll have to buy a second controller and try it out with some friends.

A stylish sword fighter - very similar to Samurai Shodown, except this game uses a dedicated parry/counter-attack button.

 On this difficulty, the normal fights are ridiculously easy. However, Musashi and Shinnosuke Kagami were still challenging. Still this game is nowhere near as hard as Ninja Master's etc.

I bought this game very cheap some time ago, and I could see from the ingame records that I never completed it before. The controls feel slightly detached from the animation like Virtua Fighter, but the core fighting is good. All other parts, like the 'story' in Story Mode is horrible... But that is not the biggest of surprises in a fighting game :).

 FINALLY completed with Ryo Sakazaki. Like so many bosses in fighters, Duke is too cheap. He takes about half my life each time he get's through with an attack; that's not fun, that's just annoying. My current strategy consist of this algorithm: <ul><li>Hold block low, wait for Duke to make an attack.</li><li>When his attack is finished, if he is within sweep range, sweep low and follow up with 4 low kicks, walk up to him, and when he rises, perform a juggling combo.</li><li>Repeat.</li><li>If your Power Gauge is full and Duke makes an attack that will not connect, punish him with a DOA Thrashing that has the appropriate range.</li><li>If you are in Guard Crush state, try to dodge attacks using R1+directions.</li></ul>Training prerequisites for this strategy is learning one juggling combo and one DOA Thrashing with a bit of range to it.

Finally got SFIII up and running on MAME. It is from 1997 and runs on Capcoms CP System III board, a very rare and unsuccesful system that were only used to develop 6 different games, 3 of which were SF games. This game looks absolutely wonderful, with super-smooth animations and very detailed backgrounds.

 Initially, I started playing on difficulty 1/8, but when I reached Gill, the end boss, he seemed to be unfairly difficult, and I suspected a SF4-like situation, where the end boss difficulty doesn't really change with the difficulty of the other characters. So I restarted on 4/8, and sure enough, he wasn't more difficult; however, I was in better training than the first time, so he had to eat it. And eat it he did.

I always had a weak spot for this one. It's a weapon-based fighter with ninjas for the Neo-Geo by ADK (Alpha Denshi Corp.) from 1996, greatly inspired by Samurai Shodown (1993), but different enough both in style and gameplay to be a very interesting play. This game does not use the Art of Fighting camera zoom, which I have come to dislike, so the graphics in NM has a bit more controlled look. The animation is very smooth, and the 10 characters are varied enough that you want to try playing with play with all of them. On the normal difficulty (4/8), I get all I can handle from the last 3-4 fights. In the end you get to fight Nobunaga yet again. How many times do I have to kill that dude?

Immersion!

Now that I am a million years old and my imagination is dull as a blob of butter, true immersion is a rare occurence. When I was a kid, all I needed was 29 green and yellow pixels to portray descending space horrors horrible enough to make killing hundreds upon hundreds of them it an utter necessity (Planetoid - Defender clone for Acorn Electron - my return key was never the same). I still like games with a 5-digit pixel count (81920 pixels should be enough for any game), but the concentration and focus of those days may sometimes be missing.

But Fallout 3 provides a world so convincing and interesting that I get completely immersed.

 Finally completed Challenge Mode 2 - the Dark Maze. Had a bit of trouble with this mode, where you can't see the maze, except for the area just around Pac-man and the Ghosts; finally I employed a hack: instead of going for maximum points (= extra lives), I instead focused on staying alive for the first 7 minutes or so by just dodging the ghosts and moving back and forth the tunnels. It worked, and then I started playing 'for real' during the last few minutes. I certainly didn't get a lot of points, but now all the modes are completed. Now I just need the 400,000 points achievement - I earn half of that during a good playthrough...

OK, so after playing Street Fighter 4, Soul Calibur IV is ridiculously easy! I completed Story Mode 15 minutes after i started it, Arcade Mode a few minutes later, and Story Mode on Hard Difficulty wasn't much of a challenge.

However, the core fighting in Soul Calibur is still as great as ever. It is without comparison the best weapon-based fighter, the controls are tight, and the range of moves, characters, and equipment is huge.

... And if you want an actual challenge, you should try the Tower of Lost Souls. It gets pretty hard and there are a lot of levels.

This game is just outright silly at times. I created a fighter, a lovely red-haired Raphael-style girl with a green dress, aptly named 'Hottie'. It seems that the armour-destruction also applies to regular clothes, so amidst a fight, her dress will disintegrate and she will be fighting in her undies. She looks cute and all, but it is a bit ridiculous. :)

How can one create a game that is so simple, so easy, and yet so satisfying? Popcap really nails casual games, to such a degree that even hardcore gamers enjoy them. Typer Shark was my first, and later Zuma, and then Peggle.

The newest is Plants vs. Zombies. It is silly, cute, ridiculous and funny. I love it.

While looking for a simple platform-ish game to analyze for gameplay, I stumbled upon 'Don't Look Back', a free Flash game with extremely simple graphics and very simple Pitfall-like gameplay. There was something about the uncompromising style and the mystery of the setting combined with the title that interested me.

I'm not going to spoil the game by divulging the story, just go play it and figure it out yourself. It is very short and pretty hard, but well worth the time.

Jeppe Carlsen suggested that I tried this artsy game, and with only 5 minutes of gameplay, I was completely up for the challenge. It is indeed very artsy, and a bit depressing to boot. It made me reflect about life. I hate games that do that. And when the idea of the game is a representation of you wasting your life until your inevitable death...

But it is interesting nonetheless.

 completed on Warrior difficulty - Play Time: 21:26, Karma Score: 19,728,474 (Lesser Ninja). With the training from playing on Acolyte difficulty, Warrior wasn't too hard. The bosses are still unfair, but some resource management takes the edge off them (saving Lives Of The Thousand Gods for boss fights is imperative). The fighting system is well worth playing the game again. There are still several weapons that I never really used.
</li>
<li>2009-01-05 00:00:00: schmid <span class="gamelog_hilight">completed</span> the game with on Acolyte difficulty.
 Chapter 12 takes place inside Mount Fuji, which has erupted as a volcano. The insides of Fuji is a horrible nightmarish hell of lava and impossible shapes of rock and huge, snake-like tentacles winding themselves high into the air, joining at a huge pulsating dark heart. Crushed buildings stand teetering over the edges of the burning lava lakes, a bit reminiscent of Gears of War 2. This level has that finished, polished look, that the rest of the game is missing.

One of the things that impressed me the most about the original Ninja Gaiden was the end bosses. Surrealism was applied to enable an even greater climax towards the end. The same effect is achieved in Chapter 12, when I now delve even deeper into the heart of the mountain; I am met by a hazy wind-swept forest, bathed in a blinding blue light - unlike anything I've ever seen in a game. Wonderful. But I must go now - I am attacked by robotic tripod ninjas :).

Of course, the graphics is not what NG2 is about. It is about dismembering hundreds upon hundreds of evil ninjas.
</li>
<li>2009-01-04 00:00:00: schmid: NG2 may not be a good-looking game overall, and indeed, the game contains some real eyesores, and all surfaces seem to be made of the same plastic material as Ryu's suit, but there are a few highlights towards the end of the game. Chapter 10, which many has seen in the trailer released before the game, is a Lovecraftian subterranean world of grey stone in improbable geometrical shapes, with winged monsters hovering in the air above. Very nice.
</li>
<li>2008-12-30 00:00:00: schmid: After demonstrating NG2 to Anders V.M. on Acolyte difficulty, I decided to restart the game on this difficulty. I reached level 6 on Warrior difficulty, but it just wasn't fun anymore. Maybe I'll resume the game on Warrior difficulty later on. Acolyte roughly corresponds to playing God of War on hard difficulty, except for the NG2 bosses, the difficulty of which vary wildly.
